Shadow Man (Lash Series Book #2)
Author Tara Fox Hall

When a renegade vampire begins amassing followers, threatening America’s vampire hierarchy, weresnake Lash partners with old enemies and new allies to annihilate them. Betrayed and left for dead, Lash reemerges the victor, catching the eye of the sultry nightclub singer Cassandra Nile, even as enemies close in from every side.
Review:  Shadow Man is book #2 in the Lash series. I recommend reading the first book, Lash, to get a clear character history. With that said, the Lash series is an original and interesting collaboration of shape-shifting species operating on a mafia-like social model. There is a flexible pecking order that can be earned through respect. However, most species don't like to mix.  Thematically, comparisons can be drawn to our own world with relation to gender, race and social-economic status. Prejudices, biases, morality, ethics and loyalty to family are significant and prevalent. A study in parallels can be made and would make for an interesting group discussion. This series isn't for the overly sensitive and does include sex, violence, abuse, attempted rape and rape scenes. All are in context, but should be noted. The sexual culture is very much in the forefront and at times, I struggled with the descriptions, attitudes, misogyny and acceptability of conduct, but they were part of the story. Even though it was hard to digest, they did add to the complexity of the novels. Such topics will provoke a variety of emotions, which I image is the intent of inclusion. Not all will be good, but this does make revenge that much more satisfying. The biggest draw back for me is I don't particularly like the main character, Lash. He is exactly the character he is supposed to be and it has nothing to do with design or description -- I just don't like him. So, when sympathetic opportunities arise, he doesn't get much from me. I simply can't forgive the things he's done to women, even though he has (in his defense) also preformed deeds to help them. I think as readers we all have a line for redemption, and Lash went a bit too far for me.
