The Marked Son
Author Shea Berkley
Seventeen-year-old Dylan Kennedy always knew something was different about him, but until his mother abandoned him in the middle of Oregon with grandparents he’s never met, he had no idea what. When Dylan sees a girl in white in the woods behind his grandparents’ farm, he knows he’s seen her before…in his dreams. He’s felt her fear. Heard her insistence that only he can save her world from an evil lord who uses magic and fear to feed his greed for power. Unable to shake the unearthly pull to Kera, Dylan takes her hand. Either he’s completely insane or he’s about to have the adventure of his life, because where they’re going is full of creatures he’s only read about in horror stories. Worse, the human blood in his veins has Dylan marked for death…

10 quickie questions with author Shea Berkley
I’d like to thank Charlie for inviting me to her blog. Meeting new people is very exciting for me. I don’t get out much. I debated whether or not to tell her that getting to know me probably isn’t wise, but she’s taken on the challenge, and I’m not one to deter someone’s plucky spirit.
#1 What’s your Favorite book?
Oh, so it’s to be torture, huh? Cruel of you to make me choose just one. Seriously, I can’t choose just one. I love books so much, and I’m completely fickle because I usually am in love with the one I’m reading, but I’ll try to narrow the list down for you. Here we go:
- Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
- Garden Spells by Sarah Addison Allen
- A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry
- Whistling in the Dark by Lesley Kagen
- In the Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss
Oh gosh, oh gosh. I want to write more. I mustn’t be annoying. I mustn’t.
I should know better than to ask an author their favorite book (giggle). That was a bit cruel.
#2 Tell us one thing that scares you?
Cockroaches. I’m not kidding. They freak me out with their little heads, rotating antennae, big armored bodies and creepy hissing. Seriously, what’s their purpose but to inspire nightmares about them crawling all over you in the dark?
I was vacationing in Hawaii (so much fun) and there’d been a mix-up at our hotel so we had to scramble to find a room somewhere. We found one, but let’s just say it wasn’t on the hotel registry of places to stay. I had to get up during the night, and I switched on the lights and Oh. My. Gosh! The walls and ceiling were covered in HUGE cockroaches. I screamed so loud, I’m sure someone thought I was being murdered. That no one came to check tells you what kind of place it was. I still have nightmares about it. (((shiver)))
#3 Name a guilty pleasure.
Peanut M&Ms and Coca Cola. I’ve been known to subsist on a handful of peanut M&Ms and a large cola for every meal (including breakfast) for a month. I’m not saying it’s smart, but I’ve done it.
#4 Reveal a bad habit.
I bite my lips when I’m stressed or really nervous. It can get so bad that I’ll literally gnaw a hole in my bottom lip. Can we just say unattractive? I’ve gotten better at not doing it, but every-so-often…
#5 What do you think is your best feature?
Okay, here’s something about me. I usually get up, get ready and then I never look at myself in the mirror for the rest of the day. I’m not enamored of my looks, so this is a strange question for me.
But when push comes to shove, I’m gonna go with the tried and true…eyes. Yep, look into my eyes and I’ll steal your soul. (giggle, snort) Umm…no. I don’t actually want anyone’s soul. Mine fills up my body just fine.
#6 Tell us a pet peeve
People who act differently depending on who they’re hanging out with. What is up with that? It’s like they’ve been body snatched. I am who I am all the time. It ain’t pretty sometimes, but you know when you’re with me, I’m really me.
#7 What you can’t live without?
Hugs. I’m a hugger. It’s bad. I invade people’s personal space. It freaks them out sometimes. I’ve learned over the years not to attack people, but once they know me, they know they’re going to get a hug. I have friends that aren’t huggers. When I approach, they will point at me and tell me to stay away. Most of the time I will, but sometimes I hug them anyway just to be annoying. (grin) I know. Bad Shea. Very bad.
#8 Favorite store?
The store I go to the most is Target. The store I wish I could go to and shop until my greedy eyes are sated would be Toys.R.Us.
#9 Favorite vacation spot?
England. When I lived there, I went everywhere. I poked around in cemeteries and castles and living history museums. Jorvik. Awesomeness!
#10 First choice: heels, tennis shoes, flats, flip flops or slippers?
Bare feet. I’m a natural girl. I’m a bit of a loner. Since I work out of my home, my wardrobe is very casual, so if I have to wear shoes they’ll be flip flops or Converse.
And 3 more in depth….about the book THE MARKED SON
Q: If you had to choose, which realm you’d live in would you pick Dylan’s or Kera’s? Why?
A: I’d like to live in Kera’s realm, not because of the magic, but because of what Kera gets to wear. I love the whole Victorian vibe. Some of the dresses are so beautiful, they’re almost like works of art. It’s one reason I love to watch period movies. Plus, I have a serious crush on Sherlock Holmes.
Q: Which character from The Marked Son do you think you most identify with and why?
A: The one I want to hang out with the most is Lucinda. She’s a piece of work.
The one I identify with the most is Grandma. She’s fierce, she’s savvy, and she’s loving. She doesn’t give up even when everything around her is falling apart. There’s something very endearing about her, especially when she holds on and refuses to give in.
Q: I don’t want to let any spoilers sneak out, but the ending of The Marked Son lends toward a sequel. Should we expect a sequel, if so, when?
A: There are three books to the Keepers of Life series. I never talk about the books I’m currently writing, but let me just say, I promise to make each of the stories as fun and entertaining as I possibly can. I’m a reader at heart, and I want that fun ride above all else. Sadly, I’m a slow writer so the second book won’t hit stores until August 2012.
